Step 10 of 10

Legacy-Maker

Create lasting impact by building systems, communities, or movements that outlive you.

As a Legacy-Maker, your focus expands beyond your own career, business, or even the people you support directly. You begin thinking about what can continue creating value without depending on your constant involvement.

This might mean building an institution, fund, school, community, scholarship, platform, body of knowledge, enduring company culture, or another structure that helps future people do more than you could accomplish alone.

Success is what you achieve. Legacy is what others achieve because of you.
What this step is about

Build something that keeps helping people when you are no longer at the center.

Legacy-Maker is where your accumulated experience becomes infrastructure for others. The challenge is to turn your values and lessons into systems, institutions, communities or traditions strong enough to continue without requiring your constant direction.

What You Will Do

Move from impact to continuity.

The goal is to create something that can keep producing value across people, leadership changes and time.

01
Define the impact you want to continue beyond your direct involvement.Clarify the people, problem, values or opportunity you want your legacy work to serve.
02
Turn personal knowledge into something transferable.Document principles, methods, stories, standards or practices so others can use and improve them.
03
Build structures that can survive leadership changes.Create governance, funding, succession, partnerships, systems or community ownership that reduce dependence on one person.
04
Develop people who can carry the work forward in their own way.Invest in future leaders rather than trying to reproduce yourself.
05
Measure the legacy by what continues to happen without you.Look for enduring capability, opportunity, culture, knowledge and impact rather than personal recognition.
Legacy-Maker Expectations

Think about what you want to leave behind — and why.

Legacy is strongest when it is built around useful values and opportunities, not just a name.

Ask yourself 01

What do I want to keep creating value after I am no longer personally driving it?

Think about people, institutions, knowledge, opportunity, culture or community.
Ask yourself 02

What have I learned that should become easier for the next generation?

Identify knowledge, access or systems that should not have to be rediscovered from scratch.
Ask yourself 03

Would what I am building still matter if my name were removed from it?

Separate enduring usefulness from recognition and personal identity.
Progress Milestones

How you can know this step is taking root.

Legacy is never truly “finished,” but these milestones help show that your impact is becoming more transferable, durable and independent of you.

I clearly defined the long-term impact I wanted to create or preserve.I could explain who it serves, why it matters and what I hope continues over time.
I documented knowledge, principles, systems or practices so other people could use them.Important learning became transferable instead of remaining only in my head.
I developed people who could lead, teach, build or decide without depending on me.I invested in future capability, not only present delivery.
I created or strengthened a structure that could continue through leadership changes. This may have involved governance, funding, succession, partnerships, community ownership or repeatable systems.
I saw evidence that value continued to be created beyond my direct contribution.Other people carried the work forward, adapted it, taught it, expanded it or created new opportunities because it existed.
Legacy-Maker Reflection

Look at what can continue because you were here.

Reflection 01

What have I created that other people can now build on without me?

Reflection 02

Who is becoming more capable because of the systems, opportunities or knowledge I helped create?

Reflection 03

If this work continues for another ten years, what do I hope it makes possible?

The journey continues

Step 10 is not a finish line.

You may still be an Explorer in one part of your life, a Learner in another, and a Leader or Legacy-Maker somewhere else. The 10 Steps are a map you can return to whenever your work, ambitions or circumstances change.
