Step 7 of 10

Leader

Build a team, delegate work, and grow your business beyond yourself.

As a Leader, you move from doing everything yourself to empowering others to contribute. You begin hiring or collaborating with others — interns, freelancers, partners — and learn to lead through vision, systems, and communication.

Your challenge now is not just to grow the business, but to grow people. Leadership at this stage isn’t about status — it’s about responsibility, structure, and building something bigger than you.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, build a team.
What this step is about

Grow beyond what you can do alone.

Leader is where the challenge shifts from managing work to managing relationships, expectations, communication and culture. Your success depends increasingly on whether other people understand what matters and can do good work without you controlling every detail.

What You Will Do

Build the conditions for other people to contribute well.

The goal is not just to add people. It is to create enough clarity and trust that the team becomes stronger because they are there.

01
Bring other people into meaningful work.Hire, collaborate with, supervise or coordinate people whose contribution helps move the work forward.
02
Clarify roles, responsibilities and expectations.Make sure people know what they own, what success looks like and how their work connects to the bigger picture.
03
Practice delegation instead of doing everything yourself.Hand over responsibility with enough context, support and trust for someone else to succeed.
04
Give feedback and support growth.Help people improve through clear communication, useful feedback and opportunities to take on more responsibility.
05
Shape the culture of the team through your own behavior.Notice what your communication, decisions, consistency and treatment of people teach others about how the team operates.
Leader Expectations

Think about the kind of leader you want to become.

The systems you build matter, but people will also learn from how you behave when expectations, trust and pressure collide.

Ask yourself 01

Am I leading with clarity, consistency, and care — or just giving orders?

Think about whether people understand the purpose behind what you ask them to do.
Ask yourself 02

How well do I balance trust and accountability within my team?

Consider whether people have enough freedom to contribute and enough clarity to know what they own.
Ask yourself 03

What kind of leader do I want to become — and what habits support that?

Translate your leadership values into behaviors you can practice consistently.
Progress Milestones

How you can know this step is complete.

Use this checklist to confirm that you have moved from doing the work yourself to creating an environment where other people can take meaningful responsibility.

I led or coordinated other people in a real team, project or business environment.I experienced responsibility for outcomes that depended on more than my own work.
I clarified roles, responsibilities and expectations for other people.I practiced making ownership and success easier to understand.
I delegated meaningful work instead of keeping every important task myself.I learned what made delegation effective — and what made it fail.
I gave feedback or coaching that helped someone improve.I practiced developing people rather than only correcting tasks.
I identified the kind of team culture I want to create and the leadership habits required to support it.I have a clearer idea of how I want people to experience working with me.
Leader Reflection

Look at what leadership taught you about people — and yourself.

Reflection 01

What have I learned about leading others — and myself — through this experience?

Reflection 02

What’s the biggest challenge I face when managing people?

Reflection 03

What kind of culture or team environment do I want to create long-term?
